Witney Flood Group

Welcome!

 Our Demands for Witney
  • Proper maintenance of the river and ordinary watercourses including silt, fallen trees, obstructions
  • Witney Bridge may have to be redesigned or rebuilt – it acts as a dam during flooding conditions
  • Other land adjustments, such as the footpath across Langel Common, may be acting as a dam
  • River Level Gauges – now in key locations to properly assess trends, driven by facts
  • An Attenuation Scheme for Witney – between Worsham and Crawley, and for Hailey Road drain
  • Joined up thinking and teamwork – working together will get us far closer to solutions
Help Needed
  • Feedback – Keep in touch so we can continue to support our community to the best of our abilities as a not for profit charity
  • Volunteer – We are seeking experience in communications, marketing, social media, fundraising, and hydrology. Use the Contact Us page to get in touch

Live River Sensor Data

How to Read Sensor Data

Guide to Dataset

  • History – Select view from the top right date ranges bar. Data can be downloaded for analysis.
  • Level Gauges – River level at each sensor location.
  • Location Map – Map view of sensor locations and current height readings.

What is Ordnance Datum?

Ordnance Datum Newlyn (ODN) is the reference value for altitude in the UK when measuring height above sea level. Observations from the tidal gauging station at Newlyn in Cornwall taken by the Ordnance Survey between 1915 and 1921 were the basis for mean sea level (MSL) to be determined.

Relevance in River Engineering

Ordnance Datum is used in every aspect of river engineering because water level is always the fundamental consideration. Here in Witney gauge boards are set to ODN and flood levels recorded against it. As the national standard applications such as topographical survey, mapping, flood modelling, improvement scheme design, construction and channel maintenance also work to ODN.
